The World Resource Institute launched its Aqueduct mapping tool yesterday, and its very much worth spending some time in. We’ve seen plenty of drought-risk and flood-risk maps, but the WRI’s implementation allows you to play with the data in various ways and get incredibly granular in your view. You can, for instance, filter to look only at groundwater replacement rates or upstream storage around the globe — or zoom in and see how dire things look in just the Western states in the U.S.

You can also sort the map to see risk factors by a specific water-intense industry. Agriculture is threatened by different types of water risks than, say, mining — but every industry shown is facing real risk in the coming decades, and none more so than agriculture.

As noted by WRI’s Betsy Otto in an accompanying press release:

Most of the world’s water is used for agriculture, which accounts for approximately 70 percent of all freshwater withdrawals. Overlaying the world’s major irrigated crop regions on Aqueduct maps reveals that many of these areas already face significant water stress. The situation may become more severe in the future—water stress is likely to grow due to climate change and increased demand for food and water.

canisfamiliaris:

Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?

The answer is NO.

The “fact” that junk food is cheaper than real food has become a reflexive part of how we explain why so many Americans are overweight, particularly those with lower incomes. I frequently read confident statements like, “when a bag of chips is cheaper than a head of broccoli …” or “it’s more affordable to feed a family of four at McDonald’s than to cook a healthy meal for them at home.”

(via sunfoundation)

this bullshit fills me with a very specific kind of rage. so, TIME TO DEBUNK!

that meal from mcdonalds takes virtually no time to acquire AND is available almost anywhere.

the second meal? that “salad” is lettuce … with nothing else, not even dressing unless its just olive oil or some milk i guess? gross.

also thats the price of each serving, not an entire loaf of bread, a bottle of olive oil, etc. that stuff adds up which means you have to have a lot of money at one time to buy it all.

that meal probably took an hour and a half to make, which is a long fucking time when you work multiple jobs or are caring for a lot of people or dont have help! seriously, if you are a single parent of three who works, is spending an hour and a half every night preparing a meal a likely option?

same with beans and rice! also, you know whats a fucking bummer? eating beans and rice every night because you are poor. ask any person who has done it and they will tell you (you can start with me).

there is a “nutrition” argument here that lacks a follow up: poor people are more likely to be doing physical labor and need more than 571 calories per meal.

you know who is less likely to know how to bake or prepare a chicken? people without access to the internet, or libraries, or who werent taught how to by their parents because their parents worked all the time. access to healthy foods is a classist issue and classism is cyclical, you fucking morons.

seriously, these sorts of infographics make me want to fucking flip tables. do you know why people don’t eat more fresh fruits and vegetables? because fresh fruits and vegetables are expensive, because they take a long time to prepare, because they dont live near a grocery store that has a decent produce section, because they dont have reliable transportation to get groceries to and from the grocery store, because they dont have the energy to plan all of the shit that is involved in making healthy, intentional, filling, balanced meals. basically: poor people get fucked, and then we get BLAMED for being lazy.

eating “healthy”, aka access to fresh fruits and vegetables, is a privilege, first, foremost, always. so fuck you new york times and your ignorant goddamn infographic.

there are SYSTEMATIC REASONS that we do not have equal access to fresh fruits and vegetables. they are very REAL problems. besides, you know, systematic poverty in america, the total mis-distribution of farm subsidies is a perfect place to start. read about that, then either get bent or start working on the actual problem.

The tiny, rock-hard fruits of Pollia condensata, a wild plant that grows in the forests of Ethiopia, Mozambique, Tanzania and other African countries, can’t be eaten raw, cooked or turned into a beverage. In Western Uganda and elsewhere, though, the plant’s small metallic fruits have long been used for decorative purposes because of an unusual property: They stay a vibrant blue color for years or even decades after they’ve been picked. A specimen at the Kew Botanical Gardens in London that was gathered in Ghana in 1974 still retains its iridescent hue.

Intrigued, a team of researchers from Kew, the University of Cambridge and the Smithsonian Natural History Museum decided to look into how this plant produces such dazzling and persistent color. When they attempted to extract a pigment to study, though, they were surprised to discover the fruit had none. - Continue reading at Smithsonian.com.

It lets us travel the way a child travels. Around and around, and back home again… to a place where we know we are loved.” — Mad Men 1x13, The Wheel

BECAUSE, ROGER! BECAUSE THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS ‘FEMALE PRIVILEGE’ IN THIS SOCIETY! WHAT YOU’RE THINKING OF IS WHAT WE CALL ‘BENEVOLENT SEXISM’ BECAUSE IT EXISTS ONLY WITHIN THE ESTABLISHED FRAMEWORK OF AN ALREADY CORRUPT PATRIARCHAL SYSTEM. BEING REWARDED FOR NOT SWIMMING AGAINST THE CURRENT IS NOT THE SAME THING. THE EXISTENCE OF A REWARD ISN’T PROOF OF PRIVILEGE BUT RATHER A MEANS FOR THE GREATER NARRATIVE OF SEXISM TO PERPETUATE ITSELF BY OFFERING CRUMBS FROM A LARGER MEAL. INSTITUTIONAL POWER IS STILL WHAT YOUR GENDER HOLDS OVER US IN ALL ASPECTS OF DAILY LIFE, AND UNTIL THOSE WALLS ARE LEVELED THE THINGS YOU SEE AS THE ‘BENEFITS’ OF BEING A WOMAN ARE ONLY FEATHERED SHACKLES!

SO I SHOULDN’T HOLD THE DOOR OPEN FOR YOU, IS WHAT YOU’RE SAYING.

YES! NO! I DON’T KNOW!
